Heritage Plaque at Seri Negara
This red circular plaque carries profound significance in the nation’s history. Issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (now the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia), it records that Istana Tetamu (now Seri Negara) was registered as a heritage site under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645). It bears the signature of Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid, who served as the Heritage Commissioner at the time.
Two important dates are associated with this recognition: 1986 and 2005. In 1986, Istana Tetamu was formally gazetted as a heritage building under the Antiquities Act 1976 (Act 168).
In 2005, Malaysia enacted the National Heritage Act (Act 645), establishing a comprehensive legal framework to safeguard tangible and intangible heritage nationwide. Previously recognised heritage sites and objects — including Seri Negara — were then formally registered within this strengthened statutory framework.
This plaque is far more than administrative signage. It represents the continuity between early preservation efforts and modern heritage governance. It affirms that Seri Negara is not merely a colonial relic, but a legally protected national asset of profound historical, architectural, and symbolic significance.
Step beneath the porte cochère, and you are not simply entering a historic house — you are walking into a carefully safeguarded chapter of Malaysia’s heritage.
